The focus for this release was making WordPress faster and lighter. The first thing you’ll notice when you log in to 3.2 is a refreshed dashboard design that tightens the typography, design, and code behind the admin. (Rhapsody in Grey?) If you’re starting a new blog, you’ll also appreciate the fully HTML5 new Twenty Eleven theme, fulfilling our plan to replace the default theme every year.

Along with the main upgrade we’ve also updated many of the standard plugins for compatibility with the new WordPress.

The coolest new stuff from a user point of view is:

1. Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
2. Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.
3. Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

We’ll try and play with the new options shortly and illustrate how they work in the subsequent posts.

The outage should be only be a few minutes but needs to be taken to incorporate security updates.

The first is WPTouch which by default automatically converts your blog into a mobile friendly look if viewed from an iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, Palm Pre or Blackberry Storm mobile device.

The second is a companion to the first, WordTwit, which integrates posting of twitter updates when you make a blog post.  It can also provide a widget to display your recent tweets, though this may not look as good as one designed for your particular choice of theme.

This is to allow us to replace a failed disk and perform preventative maintenance on the server.

We expect the downtime to commence sometime around 15:00 and last for a couple of hours. The outage may be shorter as part of the work has already been performed on the replacement disks.

This will allow us to boot with an updated kernel which has a number of security fixes we regard as needed.

The outage should last less than 10 minutes.

And after correcting a couple of bugs in the stats code to cope with changes in the wordpress code we now have viewable maps.

One point to note as that due to the restrictions on the key use you would need to look at your admin interface via the yourblog.wizblog.org address in order to see the maps and avoid a google pop-up error.  This is as previously mentioned in our recent posting Domain Mapping

If you owned example.com you would have your DNS modified to point both example.com and www.example.com at the IP address shown on the Domain Mapping page.

There is one caveat that should be noted.

Remote login does not work. It’s possible to be logged in on the main site, logged in on the domain mapped blog as a different user or not logged in at all there!

The practical upshot of this currently means you should only edit/administer via the yourblog.wizblog.org domain. All changes you make are visible under both names.
